Ingham ISD has been working with Dean Transportation to safely transport students for decades. Students with special needs require additional support to get to and from school each day. Dean Transportation drivers and staff make this happen.
Andrew Rable, special education director at Ingham ISD, reflects on the long-term partnership with Dean saying, “We have a true partner in Dean Transportation. Our communication channels are wide open, we know our drivers and we know without a doubt that Dean Transportation cares for our students.”
Over the years, Ingham ISD has seen changes in Dean Transportation personnel, but their practices remain consistent.
Kellie Dean, president and CEO of Dean Transportation, has a special place in his heart for kids. He was an educator with Lansing School District for 14 years prior to joining what was then called Special Transportation. He served as a teacher’s aide, special education teacher and a special education administrator. Dean led the charge on the federal level to establish safety standards to transport students with special needs; he is truly passionate about his work.
Stan Kogut, past Ingham ISD superintendent, initiated the first contract with Dean Transportation in the early ‘80s. “The cost of special education transportation equipment such as automatic lifts and special doors, etc. are significant,” stated Kogut. “For each district to financially support transporting special needs students on their own would be a challenge. The reason we chose Dean is because of the quality of their training, their expertise in specialized transportation and their drivers’ genuine care for kids."
“We have stayed with Dean because of their responsiveness and the positive experience we have with their staff.” Ingham ISD Superintendent, Dr. Scott Koenigsknecht, stated, “Over the years, Ingham ISD has requested bids on special education transportation to ensure costs are contained, and we have continued to choose Dean for our students.”
Development Director, Patrick Dean, states, “Transporting students is a labor of love for Dean Transportation. We take great pride in our partnership, supporting all of the programs that Ingham ISD offers.” Dean adds, “Many of our drivers have been with students since a young age and are a great support system for students and families. In some cases, our drivers are involved with students with disabilities outside of their role with Dean. They play an important part in making sure students get to school safely each day.”
Ingham ISD is fortunate to have a family-owned business in the region that understands and genuinely cares about the needs of students, families and districts.
